The whole family loves the detail provided in this atlas. BUT, be aware, each county map is smaller, requiring the use of reading glasses if you're older. There's much good info about the county alongside each map but including it causes the maps themselves to be the size that you wish was "a little bit bigger".
This man is amazing. (No, I don't know him beyond his work.) I feel so lucky to have purchased this atlas after trying to continue to explore Michigan with my very old county map book. I am stunned at the sheer amount of interesting, necessary and accurate data Mr Brown has captured for our use. The brilliance of combining old cartography with current digital advances has certainly produced a new gold standard for evaluating all atlases from this point forward. Time to hit the road!
Half the page dedicated to each County is text. Would rather have a map 2x the size
Detail on this map is awesome. We bought it as a backup to the GPS for locating waterfalls in the U.P. and found that it had many waterfalls listed we weren't even aware of!
the print is too small to read under the best conditions. They have a good idea however they are trying to cram too much into too small of a space. Almost useless.
There is no better map of Michigan in existence. If you're traveling anywhere in this state you must have this book. Even in this day of smart phones and GPS maps nothing beats a good old paper map for reliability and readability. This book also provides a lot of historical data and is a good read even when you're not on the road.
Love the info and layout. Maps by county is more useful to me for daily use, for vacationing, and for birding. I find the info more useful than my old gazetteer.
That said - the ink ran when a small amount of snow got in the seat pocket where this was kept, and the ink smeared on every page of the entire atlas. Huge surprise and disappointment.
Additionally the contrast of the map is not ideal... a better quality of paper and ink could improve the readability of the map, which is especially important when there is so much info smashed together.
Overall I want to see improvements with paper and ink - but love the content and layout. If the author/publisher improves the quality of materials used, it would make this 5 stars. As it is - mine is useless from a really small amount of snow (that fell off my son’s boots.)
